I read Can’t Hurt Me after my husband, father-in-law, and son raved about it. My son went so far as to say it forever changed his life. I love to read but there aren’t too many books I have read that I would say that about. Sure – lots of books have impacted me and taught me and made me want to strive to be better…but forever changed my life? I was curious.
And… I was particularly curious because my son doesn’t love to read. Or, at least, he didn’t love to read. But, ever since graduating high school, he has set — and accomplished some very high goals — including walking onto a D1 football team when everyone told him that was impossible. (But, that is a story for another day). The point is, when Cannon raved about the power of this book, I decided to listen.
Here’s a very honest disclosure – I don’t swear and I don’t like swearing. And there is a lot of swearing in this book. I listened to the audio but I can only assume the hard copy has the same language. And it bothered me. I didn’t want to become desensitized to that kind of language but the story was so engaging, I couldn’t stop listening. And later, when discussing the book with my son, he pointed out that David Goggins’s life has been very RAW. Nothing has been sugar-coated for him – not even as a small child. So the language – what I might define as hard and crass and difficult to listen to – is an accurate depiction of the life David Goggins has lived. And what he has endured IS hard, crass and difficult to listen to.
So with that caveat, I would highly recommend this book. It is an incredible story of the power of the human mind and spirit…the story of how one man continues to not only face but conquer the odds.
Here is the description from Amazon:
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare–poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world’s top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him the Fittest (Real) Man in America.
In Can’t Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40 percent of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.
